As the 65th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki approaches, it is interesting to note how little has been written documenting the experience underneath the mushroom cloud and what it’s been like over the years for those survivors who were there. A forthcoming book (based on survivor interviews) called “Nagasaki” fills in that gap. Hear a discussion with author Susan Southard.

Hear a provocative and insightful discussion with the man behind the Corporations Ate My Baby blog. Topics include: the menace to democracy of unregulated or under-regulated corporations; the real purpose of the Tea Party movement and its kinship with the Birchers and other fear-based movements; the need to get corporations out of government and money out of politics, and the initial steps we can take down that path.

Some astute observers may have noticed that the Bush family — beyond the 20 years occupying the presidency or vice presidency — have been
deeply a part of the U.S. levers of power for much longer. What even fewer have been able to pick up on is that George Herbert Walker Bush’s short stint as CIA director is a deceptive tip of the iceberg when compared to the family’s extensive and hidden involvement with American intelligence. And that involvement seems to disturbingly tie this family to some of the darkest chapters in our nation’s history. All of this is masterfully documented in a shocking book called “Family of Secrets: The Bush Dynasty, America’s Invisible Government, and the Hidden History of the Last Fifty Years.” The author, Russ Baker, is a top-level award winning investigative journalist whose work has appeared in the L.A. Times, the Washington Post, the New Yorker, Vanity Fair, the New York Times, The Nation, The Village Voice, and Esquire. Hear an interview with Baker.

The murder of America’s 35th president on the streets of Dallas is one of the darkest chapters in U.S. history. Because of the non-investigation investigation of the event by the government-appointed Warren Commission, scores of books have been published, attempting to fill in the blanks. A growing consensus see
NOT a lone nut assassin — but a plot involving established elements of U.S. power. A recent book not only adds to that consensus — but more importantly — looks much deeper into the question of WHY. Its examination explores the American psyche and that which is “unspeakable,” that which we will not confront. The book is “JFK and the Unspeakable: Why He Died and Why It Matters.” Hear an interview with the author, James W. Douglass.

Hear a discussion with writer, researcher, radio show host, graphic novelist, and comic book illustrator Mack White about the granddaddy of all conspiracy theories: The Assassination of John F. Kennedy. Why is it so important that this event is still probed and poked at today? How does the cover-up of the larger plot leave our system, to this day, in a corrupted state?

Hear a discussion with Eric Nadler and Bob Coen about their recent documentary Anthrax War (The untold story of the 2001 Anthrax Attacks and the dark secrets of the hidden world of modern day germ war research). To the same degree that the news media’s ignoring of this subject was frustrating, and the government’s proclamations were laughable, this film is informative, shocking and provocative — and therefore necessary.

If you ask most people to name important folk protest records of the sixties, they probably wouldn’t name something by Johnny Cash — or even think of Johnny Cash as a folk protest singer. But Cash did record an album that certainly fits that bill. And those who are aware of it, do acknowledge its power and intensity. It, however, has remained obscure for all these decades. The reasons for that are part of a larger fascinating and compelling story full of controversy and drama. It’s all captured in a wonderful new book called “A Heartbeat and a Guitar: Johnny Cash and the Making of Bitter Tears.” Hear a discussion with the author, Antonino D’Ambrosio.
